Mancat Monday: Did you know there are working cats?

Do I look like I'm working?

Happy Labor Day to my friends in the U.S. and Happy Labour Day to my Canadian friends! Connor here for Mancat Monday.

Hey, did you know there are cats who actually work? I helped Mama do some research, and it’s really not that unusual to find cats that help people and other animals.

Here’s a story Catster did about the top categories of work for cats: “On Labor Day, We Celebrate Cats with Careers.”

There are even books about cats who work, including “Cats on the Job,” by Lisa Rogak. We haven’t read it, but it looks like a book we need to read.

I was getting a little worried, thinking maybe I needed to buy a tie and get a job somewhere. But Mama said there are many ways to work that don’t even feel like work.

She said us cats are doing good work just by being ourselves. When she gets home from her job, she said seeing us and petting us and listening to our stories make her smile. When she’s not feeling good and one of us lays beside her and looks up at her, she starts feeling better. Just watching us play and interact is fascinating and helps her feel grateful, she said.

So all we have to do is just play and nap and purr, and we’re working? That’s cool. I didn’t really want to go out and get a job anyway.

Now I need to talk to Mama about salary.

  1. Well, I wish Lizzie was one of them. I wouldn't mind if she'd contribute to room and board. (Although pet therapy and purr mornings help...)

  2. Yep, we felines are always working. Not all of us have official job titles, though.

  5. I used to get belly aches when I was pregnant and my sweet cat Disco (may he RIP) used to sit next to me and knead my stomach very gently. I don't know how, but he always knew when I needed it and would go to work.

  9. We always love learning about other kitties with jobs. Cats are so talented, so the career options are endless! Of course, one of the most important jobs for a kitty is the very one you have, Connor!
