Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day to all of our U.S friends!

The New Colossus
BY Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

  5. Belated greetings. I love the photo!

When I was in high school our choir had to sing this poem. We hated it. It was an arrangement by Fred Waring and we had alternate lyrics (Give us Fred Waring and we'll wring his neck, singing this dumb chorus till he dies. The wretched refuse of this singing choir..." You get the drift. You know, we NEVER, EVER were told that this was the poem on the Statue of Liberty. Now and in this day and age, those words are so powerful and mean so much. This is a wonderful post, Tina. Thanks for sharing it, both for the memories but more for the true meaning of this wonderful poem.

  6. The traditions of Independence Day have always been based around patriotic displays and energetic gatherings, whether in the form of parades, canon firings, raising of the flag and saluting it, music, food, and of course, fireworks. https://gretagrace1234.tumblr.com/
